Diabetes

I have had type 1 diabetes since 1995, it is a chronic condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. This happens because the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. People with type 1 diabetes need to manage their blood sugar levels through insulin therapy, careful monitoring of their diet, and regular exercise.For me advocating for type 1 diabetes is important for several reasons:1. Awareness: Many people don’t understand the condition, which can lead to misconceptions. Advocacy helps educate others about the challenges faced by those with type 1 diabetes.2. Support and Resources: By raising awareness, advocates can help ensure that individuals with type 1 diabetes have access to necessary resources, such as medical care, insulin, and technology like continuous glucose monitors.3. Research Funding: Advocacy can drive funding for research into better treatments and potential cures, improving the quality of life for those living with the condition.4. Community Building: Advocating fosters a sense of community among those affected, providing emotional support and shared experiences.Having lived with type 1 diabetes since I was 7, my hope is that my personal experiences and insights can be powerful in helping others understand the condition and the importance of support systems.
